gvSIG and training activities in the framework of the SGIIAR Project

Situation:
It was necessary to provide GIS training activities to 12 researchers of the National Institute of Agricultural Research of Algeria (INRAA).
The researchers had to be trained about the fundamental of GIS starting from zero in order to collect, organize, spatially analyse and edit agricultural data.
Solution:
Three training sessions of five days each (full day courses) with theoretical sessions and practical ones using gvSIG Desktop.
Presence of one tutor during the exercises.
Benefits:
It can be stated that at the end of the three training sessions the researchers reached:
- a level of intermediate users.
- capacity to work with tables, editing, geoprocessing and raster analysis.
- knew some Sextante applications such as visibility, slope, and aspect calculation.
- practical application to identify fire highest risk areas and procedures to find the best location for fire prevention towers.
The activities was provided in 2009 in the framework of an International Project funded by the Italian Cooperation (SGIIAR, from August 2005 to July 2009).
